A prayer

God, we thank you for the moments of embarrassment —
for it is in those moments we are most aware that
we are accepted only by your grace,
  not by our own merit.
But help us never to be embarrassed of your message.

God, we thank you for the ability to ignore —
to ignore the trivialization and prejudice
  we so easily cast on others
to ignore the slandering and stereotype
  we happen to have heard of others
to ignore, so we can relate to others anew,
  as human beings,
  to meet them as you meet us.
But help us never to ignore our friends’ true needs.

God, we thank you for letting us change our minds —
so we can be persuaded to repent and turn to you,
  even as we try to persuade others;
thank you for letting us change our minds
  to turn our back on destruction
  and commit to life;
But help us not to change our minds about the way of the cross.

God, we thank you for those times when we feel out of place,
for it is then we feel empathy for strangers.
But help us never to feel out of place among our sisters and brothers.

    God, we thank you for the times when we are confused –
    so we learn to be
      open to the possibilities,
      open to different opinions,
      open to others,
    open to you.
    But help us always to be clear-minded enough to pray.
