Toasting the pope
Yesterday after church, I went to Carfax Fish and Chips.
I ordered my fish and chips, and the gentleman behind the counter said, ‘The Pope is dead.’ I showed him the prayer card I got from the Oratory earlier in the day.
He said he missed the mass. I told him that the requiem service will likely be in the early part of the coming week.
He asked where I was from, and then told me that he was from Ecuador. He gave me a glass of wine, and we toasted to the late Pope and the next one. He was about to close as I came in, he said.
I ate my meal and had my drink; and gave the glass back to him saying, ‘Gracias, mi hermano. Dios le bendiga.’ ‘Gracias’, he said.

I am reading the John Paul II obituary issue of The Tablet; it is quite helpful.
