The Revd Dr David Peel, Moderator of the General Assembly of the United Reformed Church, delivered the annual St Columba’s Lecture today (2005-10-31) on the topic of ‘In the world but not of the world: the challenge of being a counter-cultural church’. St Simon and St Jude

a sketch of Archbishop VincentI went to the Merton College Chapel today for evensong. The Most Reverend Vincent Nichols, Archbishop of Birmingham, preached. The lessons were Jeremiah 3.11–18 and Jude vv 1–4, 17–end. He related a visit to Dachau, where he could but kept silence until praying with the Psalms. He learnt the truth that liturgy is not ours, but given to us. (There was a liturgical symposium held by the Society of St Catherine of Siena.)

Remembering 2,000 US dead in Iraq

Two thousand U.S. troops have died in Iraq. In Indiana, where I am travelling, there are some statewide rallies planned for the weekend to use the 2,000 number to call for an end to the war/occupation. I think it is important to remember our fallen troops locally as well.

A memorial was held today at Worcester Common with 2,000 white crosses. Many photos at Indymedia.

More naïve observations of an itinerant communicant: iftar

This evening I went to ‘manse coffee’, and a brother from the USA nicely reminded me of how post-Enlightenment my understanding of Christianity has become. Yes, angels and demons, Virgin Birth and Resurrection, Son of God and Heavenly Father, body and blood of Christ, but not in the medieval sense — the saints before us were stretching the semantics to express things not covered by the existing vocabulary.
