Sodom and Abu Ghraib

This Sunday evening, FirstSunday invited the theologian James Alison to speak at St Columba’s. He got us to act out the stories of Genesis 19 (Lot and the Sodomites) and Judges 19–21 (the Levite at Gibeah). Here are some quick notes from me: Rather than getting hung up about the sexual orientations of the Sodomites, he linked the stories with recent events such as the abuse in Abu Ghraib. He introduced us to the book Texts of Terror by Phyllis Trible (ISBN 0800615379), who pointed out that these stories are “teetering on the brink of being Gospel”, finding the figura Christi in the concubine in the latter story.
