Green hugs!

posted by Kaihsu Tai on December 7th, 2006

Frogblog, a political blog from the Green Party of Aotearoa New Zealand:

[Australian] Greens leader Bob Brown has received a stern letter from the Senate’s president Paul Calvert, after he hugged New Zealand Greens MP Metiria Turei on the floor of the chamber during question time on Tuesday. […] Senator Brown on Thursday received a letter from Senator Calvert, warning him that his actions were ‘disorderly’.

One of my observations from the autumn conference of the Green Party of England and Wales this year: “If elections were to go to the party with the most hugs at conference rather than the one with the most votes, we would win all of them.”

Wow, that sounds better than here in Mexico… where all of us are watching with baited breath / hilarity as politicians from every party punch each other out and dump drinks on each other on the congressional floor.

Kaihsu asks me if I’ve seen this sort of behavior among American Greens. I’ve been to one state and one national convention, and witnessed both love and anger. No outbreaks of hugging, though.
