Groote Kerk, Kaapstad

Yesterday I was at Groote Kerk, Cape Town, for the 10:00 service. A congregation of the Nederduitse Gereformeerde Kerk, it is the oldest existing church in southern Africa. I enjoyed the organ which had 5 900-some pipes. We must have sung 9 or 10 hymns during the Afrikaans-language service, which (as one could expect in good Reformed/Presbyterian tradition) lasted exactly one hour, even in Africa.

I think it was Pastor André Olivier who preached on John 12 when I visited Groote Kerk.
I should say that I also visited the Cathedral Church of St George the Martyr, Cape Town, erstwhile the seat of the Most Reverend Dr Desmond Tutu.
By the way, this week’s Sunday Times reported that the Catholic Archbishop of Bulawayo, Pius Ncube, urges Britain to invade Zimbabwe and remove Robert Mugabe.
