prayer (unity)

God, on this Sunday after the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity,
we again thank you for your Church;
and for our sisters and brothers united in your son, Jesus Christ,
who taught us to pray to you as our father in heaven.

Lord, in your mercy,
hear our prayer.

As our Wessex Synod prayer calendar reminds us,
this week we pray for the congregations of the United Reformed Church
in Romsey, in Hambleden, which just celebrated its bicentenary,
and in Southbourne of Bournemouth.
God, we particularly pray
for the work with children and young people
in these congregations.

Lord, in your mercy,
hear our prayer.

As the ecumenical prayer cycle
of the World Council of Churches reminds us,
this week we also pray for the peoples of
Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden.
God, we especially thank you
for the Lutheran tradition prevalent in these lands;
and for the Porvoo Communion,
which links the churches there
with Christian communities here in these isles.

Lord, in your mercy,
hear our prayer.

In this age when we need to think again
about how we obtain and use our energy and fuel,
we pray that our nations can learn from
the diverse pioneering work in each of these countries:
wind and other renewable energy sources in Denmark,
new-generation nuclear fission in Finland,
geothermal power and hydrogen storage in Iceland, and
carbon capture in Norway.
God, we remember our sisters and brothers
in the Swedish Diocese of Växjö,
which is twinned with the Diocese of Oxford.
We give thanks for the exchange of knowledge and experience
enabled by this relationship, especially regarding
the Christian witness in caring for your Creation.

Lord, in your mercy,
hear our prayer.

God, finally we pray for ourselves,
for the United Reformed Church and our programme Vision4Life; and
for our churches of Cumnor and Saint Columba’s
during the period of ministerial transition.
Holy Spirit, focus us on the cross of Christ Jesus,
and guide us in the way of repentance and renewal.

Lord, in your mercy,
hear our prayer.

We pray all this in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour.
Amen.
