Tim no metal fan

Noah writes:

In that Lt. Gov debate on the Ch. 5 web site, Janet Wu asks the candidates what is in their ipod.

Of course, none of them own such a device, although Deb Goldberg tells us she’s a big Aerosmith fan. Then Worcester Mayor Tim Murray announces that he likes all kinds of music, but the only kind he doesn’t really like is loud metal.

Now there’s certainly nothing wrong with this sentiment—I pretty much share it myself, with a few exceptions, and it’ll certainly go over with the geriatric crowd that will turn out to the Democratic primary (without turning off the Patrick activists like he would have had he named hip hop)—but I found it amusing that the elected ambassador from the city that hosts MetalFest, gave birth to WAAF, and, between the Palladium and Lucky Dog has several metal shows a week would admit to not liking the genre. It’s sort of like the mayor of Detroit admitting he doesn’t like Motown.

Thanks to Noah for allowing us to post this. Disclosure: I am currently wearing a Motörhead shirt.

  1. I always distrust anybody who says, \”I like all kinds of music, except (blank),\” where (blank) usually represents country, rap, metal, or a combination of the three. Because the fact of the matter is that I can pretty much guarantee that there\’s a lot of music I like that isn\’t (blank) but that the person who says that won\’t like.

The question “What music do you like?” is a bad one, because most people have fairly broad tastes.

“What’s on your iPod?” or “What’s in your stereo?” are better questions, because the answers are specific. I love all kinds of music, but “what’s on my iPod” is podcasts by Dick DeBartolo and Garrison Keillor, podcasts about prayer and meditation, and the new Springsteen.

This is not a representative sample of my tastes, but it’s where my ears are at today.

When you ask “What’s on your iPod?” and the person doesn’t have an iPod, your question defaults to “What music do you like?”, a bad question that has mostly bad answers.

  3. I have a Dell mp3 player (I call it a “DellPod”), and there are probably about 50 albums on it right now (I could store a lot more if I got around to it)… what exactly does “on my iPod” mean? Does it mean just what playing currently? I believe my current music playing is:

DellPod: The Beatles, WITH THE BEATLES (in a playlist I made featuring every official Beatles recording they made from 1962 – 1970)
CD player in car: The English Beat, SPECIAL BEAT SERVICE
Latest things played on CD player at home: a 2005 compilation disc a guy made (special attention to Carlos Adolfo Dominguez’s song “Boobies”, Philip Glass’s NAQOYQATSI soundtrack
Last piece of music listened to on a computer: Blur, “Coffee and TV” (accompanied by the video)
