Blank Canvas: Just picked up the latest issue. Worcester has several publications that I can skim thoroughly in under five minutes. On the other hand, each issue of Blank Canvas takes days to contemplate. The first things I noticed:
Beautiful spread on Happy Birthday Mike Leslie.
Steve Siddle: “College students suck. . . . Having a large population of college students in Worcester is about as culturally significant as having an Applebees.”
And Mark Comeau has another zombie article, this time arguing that Worcester would be annihilated within 18 days of initial zombie infestation.

Jesus at McDonald’s: “The US Conference of Catholic Bishops has become the latest religious group to call on McDonald’s to push for its tomato suppliers to pay higher wages.”
You’ll remember Taco Bell was the first to cave to this campaign. Now McDonald’s is a well-deserved target.
Go veg: Yesterday I went to the Boston Vegetarian Food Festival. Very crowded, very fun. There were at least four other Worcesterites and one other Caltech alum (Myfanwy) in attendance.
My new rule: avoid talks by vegetarian doctors.
The highlight was during the cooking demo by the Post Punk Kitchen crew, when Peter Singer tried to make a spring roll while being mocked by Isa Chandra Moskowitz.

What’s up with the recent hipness of zombies? Did it all get started with that “How to survive a zombie attack” book, or is that book just a symptom of a wider zombie fad?
I did flip through Marvel’s collected “Essential Tales of the Zombie” comics at the comic store, and it looked like pretty good stuff. This was one of those horror titles that Marvel published in the ’70s as a “magazine,” instead of a regular comic book, so it had more adult material.
Zombies are a useful lens through which to examine issues. See both the original \”Dawn of the Dead\” and \”Shaun of the Dead.\”
Around the dinner table, I used to discuss such questions as, \”Is killing a zombie nonviolent?\” with my housemates\’ kids. (My housemates didn\\\’t like discussing zombies as much as the kids, unfortunately.)
So when you ask, \”Is Worcester prepared for zombie attack?\”, you\’re also asking, \”Is Worcester prepared for natural disaster?\”, and I think in both cases the man-on-the-street has a nagging suspicion the answer is \”No.\”
